1. Introduction

The college uses a FollowMe printing system which allows you to print to a shared print queue. This enables you to release your prints from any of the student printers across the campus two of which are located in The Exchange.

There are 2 printing methods that you can use:

  • Install the student printer on college devices only
  • Email a file to the printer (PDF and image ONLY) from any device

2. Installing the Student Printer

Follow the steps below to install the student printer on a college device:

  • From your desktop/homescreen double-click the 'Install Student Printer' icon
  • Click 'Connect' under the 'Printer Actions' heading
  • Click 'Yes' to add a printer connection
  • When you are ready to print your work select 'student printer on student printfrom the 'Printer' drop down menu

Sending your work to the student printer from your classroom will save you from having to issue a laptop from The Exchange to print your work.

3. Email printing

If you want to print from your own device you can do this by emailing your work to the printer.

However, this method will only work with specific file formats:

  • PDF documents
  • Images (.jpg)

If you need to print a Microsoft document, as these file types are not supported, you will have to save your document as either a PDF or an image.

From within a Microsoft App (web version)

  • select the 'File' menu
  • Select 'Save as'
  • Select 'Download as PDF or Download as images'

Then attach the PDF or image file to an email and send it to:

print@live.blackburn.ac.uk.

You MUST send the email from your student email address (ID number@live.blackburn.ac.uk) otherwise, the email will bounce back and you will get a delivery failure message.

4. Printing Credit

All students will get £5 printing credit at the start of term in September and another £5 in January. If you run out of printing credit you can top up your account in The Exchange or the University Centre Library. You can top up as much or little as you need. You can pay in cash or from a student bursary.

If you need additional printing credit for the Mac computers you can buy top up cards in denominations of £1 or £5.

Use the printing charges information below to work out how much your prints should be before releasing them at the printer, if you make a mistake you will not be refunded.

Printing Costs
Size |
Colour | Black and White | Colour (double sided) | Black and White (double sided)
A3 30p 10p 40p 16p
A4 15p 5p 20p 8p

5. Effective use of Printing Credit

To keep your printing costs to a minimum, please ensure that you:

  • Only print the pages that contain colour in colour and the rest in black & white
For example, if you have a 5 page document and only 1 page is in colour, print 4 pages in Black and White and only the colour page in Colour, if you print the whole document in Colour, you will be charged the price of Colour even if you only use Black and White

  • Only print the pages that you need

If you need any help with printing your work more economically just ask a member of staff at the Exchange helpdesk.
